CHAPTER SIX

Sawyer lay in Ira’s arms, cuddled close against his chest, finding comfort in the warmth and steady beat of his heart. The memory of their lovemaking was still fresh and exciting, bringing arousing images to mind. Ira had given them a tentative clean up and then convinced Sawyer to lay with him and rest for a while. Being cradled so lovingly was something he knew he could get used to very quickly.

He had fallen asleep easily with Ira’s arms around him and his fresh, clean smell filling his senses. He smelled like morning, clean, and clear, and it made Sawyer feel refreshed and clear-headed, unlike how he was a few hours ago. The memory of how badly he allowed Bobby to affect him was embarrassing, but Bobby was a scary beast. He was worse than anyone knew.

Ira lifted his right hand and brushed the hair back from Sawyer’s face as he continued to cuddle him close. Sawyer rested his head on Ira’s shoulder and wrapped his left arm around his solid muscular waist.

“I can feel your anxiety,” Ira said and began rubbing Sawyer’s arm in a soothing motion. “What’s wrong?”

“I was pathetic, but Bobby scares the hell out of me.” Sawyer needed to come clean with Ira. This was not the time for secrets, even the impossible, unbelievable kind. He wondered if Ira would believe him, the story would sound preposterous, but he hoped Ira didn’t think he was making it up or losing his mind.

“Deputy Lawrence will not lay a hand on you. His power over you is finished. Don’t fear him.” Ira was forceful and confident, but he didn’t know what Bobby was. In a normal world, Bobby could be controlled, but Sawyer’s world stopped being normal a while ago.

“He’s not an ordinary man,” Sawyer stated softly approaching the subject with care as he waited for Ira’s response.

“How is he not an ordinary man?” Ira asked, his tone careful and calm.

Sawyer ran his fingers over Ira’s bare chest as he struggled to put the words together that wouldn’t make him sound insane. “He said that he would kill me if I ever told anyone.” He began and felt Ira’s grip on his shoulders become a little tenser. “I saw something, or rather he showed me something, it was unreal. He did it to prove that he could take me out any time that he wished.”

“What did he show you, my love? You don’t have to be afraid; he can’t hurt you here.” Ira was being so empathetic it was as if he knew what Sawyer was going to say. Maybe he just thought he knew. Sawyer was aware that as soon as he let the literal cat out of the bag, all empathy and understanding would turn into questions of his sanity and sobriety.

He fidgeted and took several deep breaths before he decided to put it out there and see what happened. “He told me he wasn’t human.”

…

Ira was on edge, waiting for Sawyer’s declaration knowing what it was going to be and wondering how he was going to handle it.
